Annapurna is Sanskrit and literally means “full of food” but translates to Goddess of the Harvest. It is a reference to the Hindu god of fertility. It was likely revered as such due to the plenty of water rushing from its glaciers, rivers and tributaries that nourish the valley below and enable the huge diversity of forests and farming in the region.
The Annapurna sanctuary refers to the collection of interconnected high- altitude mountains with Annapurna I being the tallest of them all. It is the 10th tallest mountain on Earth and one of only fourteen 8000meter mountains. The mountain stands at the east of the Kali Gandaki River’s deep gorge, considered the world’s deepest canyon.
Annapurna I was the first 8,000meter peak climbed. In 1950, Maurice Herzog and Louis Lachenal made the first ascent. Although it was the first 8,000meter mountain to ever be summited, Annapurna remains the most dangerous of them all. However, for trekking, the Annapurna range boasts the most popular high altitude trails in Nepal. It is protected in the Annapurna Conservation Area, the largest such area in Nepal.
TREKKING
Trekking implies multiple days of hiking across varied terrain. Depending on conditions, this could mean walking in shorts or heavy winter jackets and sometimes even both on the same day! On the Annapurna trail we!ll be walking on a combination of well-defined village paths, windy forest and cultural tracks.
REQUIREMENTS
Although no previous trekking experience is required for this trip, team members must be able to walk unassisted at a moderate pace for multiple hours per day with a light backpack. We always recommend physical comfort, which means that you should feel comfortable with yourself. That can mean different things for different people and you!ll see all sorts of profiles on this trail. But the key is to feel comfortable with yourself.
ACCOMMODATION
On the trail we!ll be staying in tea houses, a great way to get out onto a big Himalayan trail without having to use tents. Tea houses are very basic but they include beds, common dining areas and common bathrooms and showers.
CHALLENGE
The Annapurna Base Camp expedition is a challenge but it is not only for the fringe few. We recommend this expedition for anyone looking to take a first step into high altitude trekking. No prior experience is required but be prepared to live a very immersive physical, mental and indeed spiritual experience.
EXPECTATIONS
A typical day starts at 7am with breakfast and ends at 3pm when we arrive at our next destination. Our walking pace is slow to moderate and at no instance will we be exposed to anything that requires technical gear or expertise. Although we do our best to position our experiences during the driest season, rain and snow remains a possibility so please consider the gear list thoroughly when purchasing anything for this trip.
